Management Committee and Volunteer Support
Throughout the year, our Management Committee take care of the practical and operational aspects of the club. They regularly organise a number of events and trips including the much anticipated annual Christmas lunch! More importantly, they strive to ensure that members are able to meet and interact with each other in a friendly and safe, non-threatening environment.
They actively involve members in the general running of the club, and are always open to new ideas and group discussions. In contrast, and should any individual member have a personal concern or private matter they wish to discuss, our volunteers are on hand to offer a listening ear and can potentially suggest referral to an advisory body should it be necessary.
Our volunteers are a magnificent bunch – willing to give up their time on a weekly basis, assisting members achieve and rise above any expectations. Our laptop group is headed up by Patrick, a “young” professional gentleman in his eighties, who has been volunteering, tutoring and supporting in an IT capacity for a number of years. His advice and technical knowledge is second to none – important when the risk of scams and hacking is continually rising during application of computers and mobile phones.
New Volunteers
With anticipated numbers of members increasing, we are urgently in need of more people to volunteer their time and services for our weekly club meetings. With our club opening time of 7pm to 9pm every Friday evening, we actually hire the hall for an additional thirty minutes either side to enable set up and clear the venue in terms with our hire agreement.
Give us a call or email to find out more! There’s nothing more rewarding than engaging and supporting adults with additional needs. No obligation, pop along to see our club in action.
What our volunteers are saying
Mary says…..
My name is Mary and I have been involved with the Hayward club for approximately 40 years. My neighbour was a member and she asked me if I would be interested in becoming a volunteer.
I went one Friday evening and met Mr and Mrs Hayward who ran the club, I remember it was buzzing everyone busy typing. It wasn’t just typing, volunteers sat with members who needed help reading or spelling and sometimes just to chat. Mrs Hayward asked me to work with a lovely lady who was blind – she was a music teacher and needed someone to help her with her correspondence.
Over the years I worked with lots of people of all ages and made many lovely friends. Some members moved away over time but they always kept in touch, letting everyone know how they were doing and come and visit if they were in the area. At the club I have made lifelong friends and been invited to members special birthdays and a wedding. Occasionally I have friends come to visit me and they love to come to the club with me and chat with the members. Everyone is so welcoming and members will ask about my friends if they haven’t visited for a while.
I love coming to the club every week, it is part of my life.
Lisa says….
I first became involved with the Hayward Club in 2021. Prior to this, I had knowledge of the club as she would sometimes drop Sylvia off at the church hall to catch the coach for her annual holiday. Sylvia and myself are related (Sylvia is Lisa’s dad’s cousin).
When the holidays resumed after Covid, management at the club assessed the members to see if they were still able to go on the holiday and due to the decline in her health and mobility, Sylvia needed a carer to bring her. I volunteered to be her chaperone and this was the first encounter she had with The Hayward Club.
At the end of the 2021 holiday, Sylvia asked me if I would take her away the following year and this has now become an annual trip for me.It was at this time also that Sylvia decided she wanted to attend the weekly club meeting on a Friday so I bring her when she can and stay for the evening so I can her home afterwards.
I have since become a Trustee and taken on the role of Club Secretary. This is a voluntary role that I carry out in my own time. Otherwise I work full time for a local authority.
I will also be helping with the club’s social media presence and website development and I take the minutes at any formal meetings.
