One day, the Mayor came to see us

Club member Joyce presenting a bouquet to the town Mayor

There was an air of excitement as we waited for the Mayor to arrive at our club! Cups of tea at the ready, plus cup cakes galore and just at the right time, she arrived.

Our town Mayor, Cllr Liz Jones was accompanied by her deputy Cllr Louise O’Riordan, so that made the evening extra special.

Our chairman, Doug, formally welcomed our special guests, although they were both keen for their visit to be as informal as possible. So there was no “Madam Mayor” allowed, just Liz and Louise.

Liz explained a little of the history of the office of being Mayor and some of the ceremonial duties, including being on hand should any members of the royal family visit the town. Liz also explained how serving as Mayor has become something of a family tradition with a number of generations being Mayor before her. At least one member was delighted at trying on the chain of office for herself!

Liz helpfully showed us a couple of books. One showed the history of the role and the other contained details of almost every road in Dunstable, explaining how it got its name with some interesting facts and figures. Naturally some club members were keen to learn about the roads they live in!

There was time for Liz and Louise to meet everyone in the club, going from table to table, and they took such a positive interest in the things we did – crafts, computers etc.

As it was time for our guests to leave, Joyce presented a bouquet of flowers as a gesture of our appreciation (see above photo).
