Last night at the club we had a visit from Chris who kindly set up his Scalextric track for some club members to have a go. For myself and maybe others, it brought back many childhood memories.
Our new friend Chris is a local man, here in Dunstable. After a chance meeting with a club member one day, it led to him being invited to bring some of his Scalextric cars along to the club.
Although the track was pretty big, he tells me it was only about a quarter of what he has! He set the Scalextric track up with lots of twists and turns, as well as a long straight section where the cars could really accelerate quickly. However, skill was needed to know when to slow the cars down to take the corners without skidding off!
I found that I was kept quite busy by picking cars up and putting them back on the track. It was such good fun and a number of club members had a go, some racing against each other. Chris was on hand, to offer tips and advice on how best to “drive” those cars.
I noticed a few things
- Everyone had a really nice smile as they raced those cars. No stern, sad faces.
- Even people with significant disabilities could enjoy using the kit. The control was a simple hand held trigger that was easily squeezed to make the cars go
For me, this brought back memories from my childhood. I remember playing with a Scalextric set, perhaps in the 1960s or 1970s but I can’t remember where. I never had anything like this myself, so it was probably a school friend who had the kit. The wizzing sounds, the fun and excitement of those cars skidding all around the track and the sight of cars taking off into mid air were all memories which came flooding back!
So we are so thankful to Chris, a local man in Dunstable. Thank you for your kindness and all of the efforts you went to for us. It was such good fun and maybe you can come back another time?
